Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
